Mariani Tonic Wine with Peruvian Coca, known simply as Mariani Wine, was a "tonic wine" that made its debut in 1863 in BASTIA in CORSICA and shortly after that became a worldwide success.
It was invented by a pharmacy technician Angelo Mariani, originally from Corsica, where the first formula based on Corsican white wine and Coke leaf was born, from his fascination for Paolo Mantegazza's recent studies on the Coca plant and its perceived benefits. In 1868 ANGELO MARIANI left for Paris and continued to develop coca leaves ground with Bordeaux wine, and created the COCA MARIANI Company to produce the Mariani Tonic Wine.
An appropriate "dose" was two to three glasses a day, taken before or after the main meals.
The product was marketed as a digestive, an aperitif and a general panacea. The delicious concoction promised to cure everything that afflicted you and to provide the necessary energy to actresses, inventors and manual workers...
Vin Mariani was a massive success. Mariani Coca Wine took over the city of Paris, then the rest of Europe and the United States. Taking advantage of this opportunity, Mariani opened offices in London, New York and Montreal. To meet the high demand in the United States, he opened a second laboratory in New York. Vin Mariani has had many competitors and imitators, but a smart marketing campaign led by celebrities has earned it millions of sales. While Mariani's ads claimed that thousands of doctors approved the product, it was the endorsements of celebrities that really pushed the elixir. The ads he ran in newspapers and magazines featured countless politicians, actors, writers and religious leaders, all praising the many virtues of Vin Mariani. Alexander Dumas, Emile Zola, Presidents William McKinley and Ulysses S. Grant, Thomas Edison, the Lumière brothers, Jules Verne, King of Spain, King of Sweden, Queen of Portugal, Prince of Monaco, Queen of Romania, Princess of Greece, Emperor of Brazil, King of Cambodia, King of Serbia, President of Argentina, Grand Duchess Wladimir of Russia, 6 Presidents of France, as well as countless monarchs, including Queen Victoria of England, were among the drink's supporters. In addition, actress Sarah Bernhardt... Pope Leo XIII (who awarded him a gold medal!) were among the many people who appeared in the ads.
Pope Benedict XV awarded his gold medal to his coca wine, Mariani and then Pope PIE X did the same. The Popes appreciated the beneficial effects of this Tonic Wine, and each of them awarded a gold medal to Mr Mariani as a sign of gratitude".
There were so many competitors, many of whom offered inferior products, that led Mariani to publishe this ad in The Medical And Surgical Reporter at the turn of the century. Angelo Mariani died in 1914, a few months before the First World War. In the meantime, his product has been besieged by several enemies, some in the United States, others worldwide.
